Sierra Wireless embedded modules and EMConnect™ firmware features integrated in Ford Work Solutions system, providing in-dash Internet access and fleet management for Ford vehicles

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR - TSX: SW) today announced that Magneti Marelli has selected Sierra Wireless mobile broadband embedded modules with EMConnect™ firmware features for integration into its telematics products developed for safety, entertainment and satellite navigation applications. Magneti Marelli’s telematics product offering with the integrated Sierra Wireless MC5727V embedded module is now available to Ford customers as part of the Ford Work Solutions system, providing high-speed internet access, location based services, and fleet tracking and management capabilities.

Magneti Marelli, as a broad range automotive supplier, has operated in the field of telematics and satellite navigation since the early 1990s, and boasts a complete and scalable range of telematic products. Magneti Marelli’s offering, with integrated Sierra Wireless embedded modules and EMConnect firmware features, enables a wide range of applications, such as the distribution of real-time traffic information and location based services, as well as fleet tracking and management.

“Sierra Wireless is pleased to collaborate with Magneti Marelli in providing dependable and capable high speed wireless connectivity for Ford Work Solutions,” said Mike Ardelan, vice president of Worldwide OEM Sales for Sierra Wireless. “Sierra Wireless understands equipment manufacturers’ needs to integrate the latest embedded technology and features in a timely, cost-effective way. Sierra Wireless embedded modules and EMConnect firmware features are designed to assist manufacturers in creating a cost-efficient, compelling product for their customers.”

“Sierra Wireless is a proven leader in the wireless broadband industry. The company is committed to continually enhancing its line of 3G wireless products and features, ensuring we can integrate wireless technology solutions smoothly to support customers’ requirements,” said James Rosseau, President and CEO for Magneti Marelli Electronic Systems North America. “By integrating Sierra Wireless’ 3G embedded modules and firmware features into our telematics products and navigation solutions for automotive applications, we can be assured our customers are receiving the most reliable, advanced products available on the market today.”

Sierra Wireless EMPOWERED™ and EMConnect

Sierra Wireless embedded modules are powerful, cost effective solutions that easily integrate into laptops, portable devices and fixed wireless terminals, offering complete wireless data solutions over HSPA and EVDO Rev A networks. Sierra Wireless EMPOWERED™ devices deliver the reliable, high-quality mobile broadband connectivity customers have come to expect from Sierra Wireless, embedded and optimized within the host device to offer the best possible performance. The company provides professional services to customers requiring expertise in wireless design, integration, and carrier certification.

With the new EMConnect firmware features, Sierra Wireless embedded modules can serve as stand-alone connections for machine-to-machine applications such as advanced meter reading (AMR), advanced meter infrastructure (AMI), remote monitoring and control, and remote updating for applications like digital signs. This capability eliminates the need for a separate host processor in the device itself and allows OEMs to reduce development time and cost.
